Utilities are rapidly implementing advanced communication networks, a component of the smart grid. The openness and ubiquity of these networks enable many of the benefits of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) systems, but this same openness can create a vulnerability to the same risks faced by enterprise networks and the internet.
This paper reviews the range of security options available—from firewalls to multilayer encryption—along with an outline of security concerns along different points in the network. The Sensus FlexNet® AMI system is also discussed in detail, including the integration of IBM’s asymmetric encryption and enhanced key management technologies for managing electric, gas and water utility smart endpoints.
