Sensus’ Win in Great Britain Has Positive Economic and Environmental Benefits

Consumers can control energy use and costs while helping to lower carbon dioxide emissions

Sensus, a leading provider of clean technology solutions, will provide the core communications technology to support the UK government’s plan to rollout electric and gas smart meters to ten million locations in the northern region of Great Britain. Arqiva, as the prime contractor, will build and run the communications network.

“We are delighted to serve Great Britain with clean technology that will conserve resources, reduce energy costs and lower CO2 emissions,” said Sensus Chairman Lou D’Ambrosio. “With 16 million FlexNet™ endpoints already in operation in the US, Sensus technology is driving operational and economic efficiencies for electric, gas and water utilities—and we will continue to deliver benefits to customers around the globe.”

The northern region, encompassing northern England and Scotland, is a vast 113,255 square kilometers (43,726 square miles) of rural and urban communities. It contains six of the 10 largest metropolitan areas in the UK, including Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Sensus will connect 16 million meters to 10 million homes in the region with its FlexNet technology, which is based on open standards and supports IPv6 communication.

This connectivity is part of Great Britain’s smart metering program—a progressive endeavor that will save energy, create jobs and be a shining example of clean technology at work.

“Great Britain’s smart metering project is expected to produce benefits reaching $11 billion (USD). The program will be closely watched by every country currently considering or in the early stages of implementing a smart network,” said Navigant Research Director Bob Lockhart. “For the selected vendors, this latest opportunity is a catalyst for reaching other global markets.”

Adding up to success

16 million: Smart meters connected to the network

10 million: Homes and small businesses in northern region that will be connected

1: Sensus is the only U.S. company involved in the world’s largest smart metering initiative

As early proof-point deployments at ScottishPower and Thames Water demonstrated, the Sensus communications technology is uniquely suited to reach smart meters and other devices in hard-to-reach locations. The network ensures interoperability of all applications that communicate via the Sensus system, providing sustainable technology solutions for years to come.
