Sensus Metering Systems and AMDS Formalize Agreement

Sensus Metering Systems (Sensus), a leading provider of utility metering and AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) systems and Advanced Metering Data Systems (AMDS), a wireless connectivity company, have formalized the agreement in principle that the companies announced in September 2004. Under the terms of the Marketing and Sales Agreement, Sensus is granted exclusive rights to market and sell the AMDS Connect RF fixed network technology as an integral part of its advanced metering solution for the North American electricity market, as well as to manufacture and sell electric meter modules for the Sensus iCon solid-state electricity meter. Sensus will also produce AMDS meter retrofit modules for currently installed electromechanical electricity meters that link into the AMDS AMR fixed network.

“We believe that this is a great arrangement for both Sensus and AMDS,” says Dan Harness, CEO and President of Sensus Metering Systems. “The two-way and one-way capability of the AMDS RF fixed network system provides the flexibility that the electric utilities have expressed a requirement for in an AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) system. The AMDS AMR system has enhanced features required of today’s AMR systems, but can also expand into distribution management functions such as load shedding and customer messaging utilizing the system’s two-way communications. The AMDS system is a key addition to the Sensus AMR offering portfolio providing Sensus with AMR capability for the electricity utility market in conjunction with our iCon solid-state electricity meter and our water and gas AMR systems. Sensus provides AMDS with an experienced sales and marketing group, backed by a capable technology and production structure dedicated to delivering intelligent, communicating metering based solutions to the utility industry.”

The AMDS fixed network architecture is based on a wireless design that is simple, reliable, and easy to install and maintain. The patented technology uses sophisticated Base Stations connected to existing radio towers spaced 5-15 miles apart to directly reach two-way and one-way metering endpoints. This type of range and design simplicity eliminates the need for multiples of data collectors and provides for efficient and cost effective AMR system operation.

“In working with Sensus, I have found their business to be of the highest quality, especially their personnel, and their culture to be that of team cooperation,” said Britton Sanderford, Founder and President of AMDS. “While a newer entrant into the electric utility market, they have a clear strategy to be a major player there just as they are in the gas and water utility markets where they have participated for many years. I am very pleased that we were able to form this exclusive arrangement and work with the Sensus team to promote the AMDS-enhanced AMR solutions as part of their overall electricity market strategy.”

Under the agreement, Sensus will brand the FlexNet solution including metrology, the AMDS Connect meter interface, and the AMDS network. This branding highlights the flexibility of the system to provide a number of advanced AMR/AMI system features. The FlexNet solution from Sensus will be unveiled at the upcoming DistribuTech Conference being held in San Diego, CA the week of January 24, 2005. Sensus will be responsible for all sales and marketing of the FlexNet product components and AMDS will provide services, which accompany the network sale. AMDS provides 24/7/365 system health monitoring and network repair services, thus helping to ensure that accurate meter data is being reliably and efficiently communicated to the utility.
