Sensus Launches Smart Gateway Technology for Utilities to Manage Operations—Even in Hard to Reach Areas

Battery-powered interface simplifies installation and provides location flexibility

(Click-to-Tweet) – Sensus Smart Gateway will help public service providers, like water utilities, retrieve more data on the operational performance of their system from all locations in a timely and cost-efficient manner. The battery-powered device maximizes providers’ investment in the FlexNet™ communication network by sending data without the need to “plug” into electrical power. This helps to proactively address preventive maintenance in the production and distribution system and identify equipment failures and potential theft or tampering.

“Public service providers need to monitor more than just meters,” said Dan Pinney, global water marketing director at Sensus. “Smart Gateway helps our customers reach farther by monitoring distribution lines, pump stations, vaults and pressure gauges, and minimizing the need to deploy crews to detect issues.”

Smart Gateway is a cost-effective solution that needs no power lines, unlike competing products. The technology helps utilities receive data on water pressure and leaks in areas of the network that were once only accessible by sending out professional crews. It also sends security alerts if doors or valves are opened.

“What previously required a truck roll or significant infrastructure can now be achieved through a simple addition to the FlexNet system,” said Pinney.

Benefits of Smart Gateway include:

  • No external power required Leverages existing FlexNet network
  • No additional infrastructure necessary
  • No costly filters or batteries to maintain
  • Cost-effective option for extensive data accumulation
  • Aids in operational improvements
  • Scalable to utilities’ needs

The Sensus FlexNet system is a long-range radio network that provides a scalable and reliable communications infrastructure that enables smart cities. The range of the point-to-multi-point network reduces the number of access points required to capture and transmit data. Public service providers using the FlexNet communication network can support multiple applications that increase operational efficiency and customer engagement. Sensus’ large investment in licensed spectrum ensures that customers have the bandwidth required to support future data requirements.

Smart Gateway and its applications benefit water and gas utilities of all sizes, geographical locations and requirements. The battery-powered sensor interface will be available in December 2015.

Summary:
  • Smart Gateway is a battery-powered FlexNet interface that transmits critical information from remote locations to a utility office—without the need to “plug” into electrical power.
  • Smart Gateway helps to proactively address preventive maintenance in the production and distribution system and identify equipment failures and potential theft or tampering.
  • Smart Gateway and its applications benefit water and gas utilities of all sizes, geographical locations and requirements and will be available in December 2015.
