After being listed as a “Vendor of Record” for the Coalition of Large Distributors in Ontario, Sensus Metering Systems has been chosen to install more than 25,000 FlexNet-enabled iCon meters in Newmarket and Tay, Ontario.
Newmarket Hydro, recognized as a pioneer in the Ontario Electricity Market, selected the FlexNet AMI solution for full deployment in its franchise areas commencing January 2007.
“After piloting a number of AMI technologies, it became clear that the FlexNet AMI system provided the most cost-effective, feature-rich solution available on the market,” said Paul Ferguson, President, Newmarket Hydro. “Having worked with the Ontario Ministry of Energy to be identified as a priority deployment area, we are excited to begin installing the system and look forward to reaping the benefits that the FlexNet solution will provide for us and our customers.”
FlexNet is a radio frequency, fixed network utility meter reading system designed to increase meter reading efficiency, reduce overhead costs, and enhance customer service. Its two-way fixed based design reaches to over 700 square kilometers of coverage, depending on terrain, from one collector. The patented technology allows for Internet Protocol configuration of the network and meter endpoints, as needed.
In addition, the system is designed to be scalable to accommodate growth as a utility expands the meter deployments throughout its service territory. Because the FlexNet system is a tower-based AMI network, reliance on additional infrastructure, such as numerous collection points is avoided. The system has a simple, single-tier design: from meter to tower, substantially reducing infrastructure cost.
