Sensus Metering Systems Signs Smart Metering Contract with SMPPI and Pepco

Sensus Metering Systems announced today the signing of a contract with the Smart Metering Pilot Program, Inc. (SMPPI) and Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco), to implement the Sensus FlexNet Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system and deploy Smart Meters in Washington DC.

The pilot program, known as PowerCentsDC, will be the first in the electric utility industry to test the response of residential customers to three different pricing options under one program. Each of these pricing options – hourly pricing, critical peak pricing, and critical peak rebate – will enable customers to control their bills by reducing electricity use on days and during hours when wholesale electricity prices are high and by shifting their energy use to other times when electricity prices are lower.

“This project will showcase to the consumer and utility the benefits of the Sensus FlexNet AMI system and our line of iCon electricity meters,” says George Uram, Vice President, Electric Metering and AMR/AMI at Sensus Metering Systems. “Our corporate commitment to AMI systems and intelligent communicating meters enabled Sensus to be selected for this exciting energy management project.”

Meter data information will be provided using Sensus iCon® “smart” meters. This $2 million pilot project will include up to 2,000 electric meters and support services. The program will operate using two FlexNet tower locations in Pepco’s Washington DC service area.

“We look forward to getting the SMPPI project deployed and working with Sensus,” said Rick Morgan, Commissioner of the Washington DC Public Service Commission and Chairman of SMPPI. “We selected the FlexNet system based on several criteria, including the cost-effectiveness and reliability of its communications infrastructure.”
