Los Lunas and Sensus Team for Efficient Metering Program

Water utility customers of Los Lunas, New Mexico are on course to reap the benefits of FlexNet, a technically advanced meter reading system. This advanced technology, offered by Sensus Metering Systems, is a perfect match for the sophisticated infrastructure and progressive thinking of this New Mexico city and its water officials.

Los Lunas utility officials are switching from the Sensus TouchRead system to Sensus’ patented FlexNet system, an RF (radio frequency) wireless fixed base system.

With about one-half of a 5,200-meter implementation plan in place, Los Lunas is already realizing the benefits provided by the single-tiered FlexNet architecture in this 10-square-mile service area. FlexNet’s primary use license system and its 2 watts of power is allowing for greater transmitter range, from minimal infrastructure, which in turn is lowering operating costs.

“We first selected the Sensus FlexNet system because it provided the features required to meet our need to streamline our data collection. And we are very happy to see the savings from the minimized infrastructure requirements,” says Greg Wortman, Water / Sewer Supervisor for the Village of Los Lunas.

“And, we’re seeing a positive impact in our customer service program from the hourly reading intervals and leak detection features. It’s clear that the system is going to perform according to our standards.”

Los Lunas is leveraging its recently installed, citywide WiFi application as they integrate the FlexNet system by co-locating the FlexNet equipment on the same site as the WiFi system. All of the electronics for the FlexNet system and core components of the WiFi network are located in the same building next to the tower. This enables Los Lunas to plug directly into the WiFi backbone and transmit data to the utility office.

Further, the company is benefiting from a streamlined migration path from one system to the next. Since Los Lunas was already a Sensus TouchRead user, and they were able to use the latest Sensus transmitter, the 520X. The 520X transmitter utilizes the patented TouchCoupler technology and an upgrade is accomplished by simply plugging the existing TouchRead PitLid (TR/PL) sensor into the new, assembled transmitter.
