Cumberland, Maryland Chooses Sensus

City officials of Cumberland, Maryland will migrate their 11,000 water meters to the FlexNet system, an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solution by Sensus Metering Systems, in partnership with local distributor L/B Water Service. Cumberland recently selected Sensus for the overhaul of its 40-square mile service area, which will focus on changing existing TouchRead and RadioRead water meter reading equipment to FlexNet.

“Our service area’s terrain is extremely challenging, ranging from urban to mountainous terrain and remote rural locations,” said Robert Rider, superintendent of technical services for the City of Cumberland. “FlexNet’s ability to accurately transmit water usage data in and around the Cumberland area will definitely be an asset to us.”

Cumberland will now utilize Sensus’ patented FlexNet system, a wireless RF (radio frequency) fixed base meter reading system. FlexNet’s primary use license system and its 2 watts of power allows for greater transmitter range which means minimal infrastructure, resulting in lower operating costs. The City will also realize installation benefits by using the latest Sensus transmitters, featuring the patented TouchCoupler technology for both pit and non-pit set meter environments. And because of the unit’s simple design, Cumberland will also see a cost savings because its own staff will handle installation, thus eliminating the need to outsource that part of the project.

Compatibility with a recently installed, citywide WiFi system is another benefit the city will realize with the FlexNet deployment. FlexNet’s equipment is able to plug directly into the City’s WiFi backbone and transmit data from the tower, or collection point, to the utility office thus saving the utility any additional backhaul communication expense.
